Born in Tachikawa, Japan, Mia Sato O’Neal is an African-American and Japanese photographer and film director based in Tokyo / Los Angeles. Her experiences navigating life as a military child—constantly relocating between countries and adapting to new people and cultures—profoundly impact her world view. Often exuding nostalgic and melancholic undertones, her art reflects back to the challenges faced in navigating her multicultural female identity in the midst of her inconsistent alternating environments.
Mia’s vision for the future encompasses collaborating on provocative photographic and cinematic works for both arthouse and mainstream audiences, provoking society to rethink traditional notions of happiness and beauty, and always working to compensate for what she lacked growing up: bringing more minority representation to the forefront.
