Tokyo-born, Mia Sato O’Neal (b.2001) is an African-American and Japanese photographer and filmmaker currently based between Tokyo and Los Angeles. Her upbringing bouncing between Europe and America informs a multicultural but cluttered identity, never conforming to her surroundings.
Through a blend between film and photographic mediums, her intimate, documentary-like lens instinctively explores subjects caught in states of tension—whether its self-perception and conformity or presence and performance. Centering a female gaze that resists categorization, these internal tensions echo her surrounding environments, where modern technological life and nature coexist in an ever quietly growing dissonance.
東京生まれの佐藤(オニール)海亜（2001年生まれ）は、アフリカ系アメリカ人と日本人のルーツを持つ写真家・映像作家で、現在は東京とロサンゼルスを拠点に活動しています。ヨーロッパとアメリカを行き来する中で育った経験は、多文化的でありながらも混在したアイデンティティを形成し、常に周囲に完全には馴染めない感覚を伴っています。
フィルムと写真という二つのメディウムを横断しながら、彼女の親密でドキュメンタリー的な視点は、自己認識と押し付けられた同調、存在とパフォーマンスの間にある緊張状態に置かれた被写体を捉えます。分類されることを拒む女性のまなざしを軸に、そうした内面的な緊張は、現代のテクノロジーに支えられた流動的な都市生活と、静止する自然との間に静かに広がりつつある不協和として、周囲の環境と呼応しています。
